I went into the film wondering what the main story was, I wanted to show that in the poster. By the end it was obvious; trust. MacReady never trusts anyone the whole film. He's a loner throughout, until the end. He shares a drink with Childs while they both question if the other is the thing. Inspired by this and the grotesque, distorted and horrifically beautiful look created for the thing changing form. The sandworms in the corner against black is where I can feel it most. Bowie’s entrance as a falling star, a scene of a wall of TV flickering humanity’s contradictions and accomplishments. Bowie’s alien family looking back at him. And the small town much of the film is set in. The polaroid like film, introduced in a rompus sex scene with Rip Torn… yeah couldn’t ignore that. And the big boat of a Lincoln that was shot low and close with a wide lens making it feel like a spaceship. I absolutely loved drawing young Bowie for this poster. So I channeled his fear and saw the swarm of birds circling the Theater capturing the building tension and a single bird top of the sign with its dead eye staring.  The film was presented at the Texas Theatre with a performance by the Dallas Neo-Classical Ballet.  The troop had performed it at a college and some footage had made it onto social media. I captured some stills from that and placed them in the corner. You can see the White Russian becomes the dividing line, at the top it has a white background and the bottom dark. The cream flowing into the drink turns into the LA skyline. I thought it was a good fit for the trippy dream sequence in the film and how the Dude’s life gets turned upside down. I went into the film wondering what the main story was, I wanted to show that in the poster. By the end it was obvious; trust. MacReady never trusts anyone the whole film. He's a loner throughout, until the end. He shares a drink with Childs while they both question if the other is the thing. Inspired by this and the grotesque, distorted and horrifically beautiful look created for the thing changing form. Pee Wee’s exhibition of personality in the face of ups and downs gave me permission to be myself. Pee Wee keeps making big mistakes in movie but all the while he is bright, loud and caring. Later when Pee Wee’s Playhouse came on TV it was magical. It was like the movie expanded a chapter every Saturday morning.
