Capturing the sense of scale, Wynona Ridder’s face looks down at our recently deceased protagonists about to unearth Beetlejuice.

The black and white works perfectly with the look of this film. I have a background in traditional printmaking and this poster reminds me of that look. In particular wood cuts, where you have to carve out the whites from a solid block, as opposed to drawing on paper, where you start with white paper and add the dark pencil. The sandworms in the corner against black is where I can feel it most. Originally there was a fully drawn tree there, but the composition felt off and I removed it in favor of big Sandworms.

Don’t feed this poster after midnight. Gremlins has a great exploding movie theater scene, so it was an easy leap to reprise it as the Texas Theatre. The fable of a man and his rug captured the end of the ‘90s. The film spawned festivals and adult bowling themed birthday parties. I try to challenge myself with each poster and with this one I was trying to make a poster that you could hang upside down and it would look right. You can see the White Russian becomes the dividing line, at the top it has a white background and the bottom dark. The cream flowing into the drink turns into the LA skyline. I thought it was a good fit for the trippy dream sequence in the film and how the Dude’s life gets turned upside down. It wasn’t quite as successful as I wanted it to be an upside down poster, but it did make an interesting composition with the upside down bowling lanes.

Beaches is the story of two women putting their faith in friendship above all else. It’s often overlooked but is a cinematic masterpiece; with the script storytelling of a mid-century movie and a 1970’s sentimentality to acting and editing. I tried to get as much of the story in the poster. Just like the movie was able to show the whole lives of the two main cheaters from beautiful begin to beautiful end.

Made for the Texas Theatre in 2020 when they turned their back parking lot into the Sunset Dive In.

Filmed just outside of Dallas TX this film has a little something for everyone's cheesiness.

Made for the 20th anniversary of Fight Club.
