He's a loner throughout, until the end. He shares a drink with Childs while they both question if the other is the thing. Inspired by this and the grotesque, distorted and horrifically beautiful look created for the thing changing form. Visually it's mesmerizing as we see the surreal scifi moments of Bowie’s alien family and inner life. I grabbed a few key elements to piece together the poster. Bowie’s entrance as a falling star, a scene of a wall of TV flickering humanity’s contradictions and accomplishments. Bowie’s alien family looking back at him. And the small town much of the film is set in. The polaroid like film, introduced in a rompus sex scene with Rip Torn… yeah couldn’t ignore that. And the big boat of a Lincoln that was shot low and close with a wide lens making it feel like a spaceship. I absolutely loved drawing young Bowie for this poster. Kubrick created many one of a kind sets and camera rigs to take cinema into space like never before. He reached deep into Arthur C. Clarke’s novel and translated that depth into visuals. This film captured that and was my most watched film as a kid. Pee Wee’s world felt good, a safe place for big emotions, for being silly, and for cross dressing.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003ePee Wee’s Big Adventure was dramatic and heart breaking, I felt sad when Pee Wee doesn’t turn around to see his bike on a truck right behind him, and thrilled as he starts dancing to get all the bikers to love him. Pee Wee’s exhibition of personality in the face of ups and downs gave me permission to be myself. Pee Wee keeps making big mistakes in movie but all the while he is bright, loud and caring. Later when Pee Wee’s Playhouse came on TV it was magical. It was like the movie expanded a chapter every Saturday morning.
